MESSAGE FROM BERNARD-HENRI LEVY
We won. Freedom won. Tolerance won. And, thanks to all of you, respect won.
I want to thank you, Internet users, who were involved in this fight for democracy and peace. Thanks to everyone who refused the unacceptable and helped in this beautiful victory. Thanks to Liliane Lazar. Thanks to all her students who pitched in behind her and followed us in this campaign.
Thanks to Laurence Roblin, who became an expert in twittering, Digging, and other RSS flows. Thanks to Jean-Baptiste Descroix-Vernier’s team who, like me, found it simply intolerable that a censor, an enemy of true culture, a hunter of Internet users and bloggers, an adversary of freedom of thought and of the press, could undertake the direction of the world’s highest cultural institution. Thanks to everyone who right up until the last moment–when we discovered that Farouk Hosni had also been a man who in another life was mixed up in vile operations–have relayed our messages and our outrage. Thanks to Arianna Huffington and her Huffington Post for having been at the forefront of the battle from the very first article that we co-authored with Elie Wiesel and Claude Lanzmann. It was a battle for honor and principle. And the defeat of the spirit of compromise and realpolitik. Now good luck to Irina Bokova. And bravo to you all.
Bernard-Henri Levy
